Pit Technique, Xmas Parade & Benefits of deep breathing

Posted on 30, Nov | Posted by Adrian

Pit Martial Arts Grappling move of the week is the “Kimura”. It is a very basic traditional and VERY effective Brazilian Jiu Jitsu technique. Learn to use it. There are many different ways to set up a kimura (shoulder lock). Here is a quick run down.

The 2010 Arroyo Grande Xmas Parade was a huge success! For the third year in a row The Pit Martial Arts has been a part of this ever growing festival. We are happy to represent our school, and our students. Hundreds of spectators and parents from the cities stand in the frigid weather to see all their children and students.

Here at The Pit Martial Arts, as we train and workout we often find our selfs tired and trying catch our breaths. The Pitmaster John Hackleman emphasizes the benefits of deep breathing. He understands the anatomy of the lungs, and teaches us the importance of deep breathing. Here is some good tips.

Benefits of deep breathing:

  • Fast breathing rate is linked to high blood pressure
  • Studies have shown deep breathing benefits asthma sufferers.
  • Deep breathing reduces stress-if you are stressed, you breath in short, shallow bursts-To relax you do the opposite – breathing deeply
  • Deep breathing releases endorphins-the bodies own painkillers, into the system. This can help relieve headaches, sleeplessness, backaches and other stress related aches and pains.
  • Deep breathing helps to clear and focus the mind
  • Deep breathing strengthens weak abdominal and intestinal muscles

Try these deep breathing exercises:

To ease tension and give your health and energy a boost, begin by sitting or lying comfortably. Breathe in slowly and deeply through your nose, counting to six. Hold breath while slowly counting to six. Exhale slowly through your mouth, slowly counting to eight.

Concentrate on counting and your breath. Feel you lungs fill up with precious oxygen. Feel your heart rate slow. By exhaling more breathe than you inhale, you cleanse all the stale air held in your lungs. Feel the relaxation deep breathing brings.

Repeat this exercise several times.

Makiwara Training Guide

Posted on 28, Nov | Posted by Adrian

When you first begin training the Makiwara, you should do so gradually.Start out w/ maybe 20-30 strikes w/ each hand, w/ every technique, then build up.

You should be cautious when training The Makiwara, as to if you start bleeding,Makiwara training should be discontinued, untill you are fully healed.

Also, if you tear, or rip the skin at all, you should discontiue Makiwara training untill you are fully healed, as well .

When striking The Makiwara w/ Seiken, you should concentrate all of your energy on the first Knuckle, that way when you strike the Makiwara, your fist would flaten & the first 2 knuckles would make contact w/ the Makiwara. If you would aim w/ the first 2 knuckles, I am told that you would end up actually hitting w/ the 1st 3 knuckles.

When striking the Makiwara, you should strike it , and upon impact lock it in place .

Makiwara training is not done for conditioning of the Knuckles, that is only a biproduct.

Makiwara training is done to strengthen the wrist & to develop power from the hips .

Bone Density is increased in the arms & upper body thru Makiwara training ; Vibrations running through the bone tissue induce the production of bone material , which increases the density of the bone tissue .
